You may not agree with many of the theories, or even with the author’s evaluation, but will come away well-informed. This was assigned reading for my hermeneutics class, but I found Thiselton’s overview of the history of hermeneutics to be informative, concise and clear. Your favorite Eerdmans titles can be purchased through leading retailers including Amazon.

A brief yet superficial introduction. Feb 02, ben adam rated it really liked it Shelves: He clearly knows his stuff, but his presentation left me feeling dizzy at many points. Before reading, you should at least have a handle on what hermeneutics itself is and some different approaches people have taken to it. Instead, it presents more of an anthology of hermeneutical thinking from ancient to postmodern times.
New Testament General Works. The Impact of Literary Theory on Hermeneutics. It is truly Tony Thiselton’s legacy and the uncluttered distillation of a lifetime’s study of hermeneutics.

Thiselton is reasonable though and I have no feelings of ill will in his endeavors or analysis, just wishing I didn’t have to read him. After a thorough historical overview of hermeneutics, Thiselton moves into modern times with extensive analysis of scholarship from the mid-twentieth century, including liberation and feminist theologies, reader-response and reception theory, and postmodernism.
Thiselton name-drops with reckless abandon. He almost never credits a woman with an independent insight throughout the entire book and states that Liberation Theology is fizzled out, not realizing that women are now the most original biblical interpreters and Liberation Theology is now so ubiquitous that most people do not even realize it has influenced everyone. This is a fantastic introduction to the history and development of hermeneutics within the Western world at least after a brief study of Jewish and early Christian models of interpretation.

This is a rare treasure among hermeneutics theorists. Provides an introductory overview of the history of hermeneutics, with an emphasis on application to theological and Biblical studies. Unlikely many in this field who are given to hermeneuttics convoluting their sentences, Thiselton’s style is crisp but not overly dry.
